Animals: Structure and Function

Groups of organs with specific structures and functions work together as systems, which interact with other systems in the body.
The development and uses of technology to maintain human health are based, in part, on the changing needs of society.

Molecular Models

Today we took up homework questions about combining atoms. We then worked on building models of common molecular compounds using the number of covalent bonds they form as a guide. Students are asked to complete ONLY questions a) - c) of their worksheet for Thursday.

Combining Atoms

Grade 9s made and recorded final observations of their rusting experiment that they began last week. Lab reports are due tomorrow. We then had a lesson about how atoms combine. Students are asked to complete the questions on p. 266.

Rate of Rusting

Yesterday, Grade 9s took up their homework questions on molecules. They each set up their individual investigations into factors that affect the rate of rusting. Students who are writing the periodic table retest on Monday are reminded to study over the weekend.

Rust

Grade 9 students learned that iron combines with oxygen to form iron oxide in a process we call rusting. They began planning an investigation into the rate of rusting as follows:
Temmi - temperature
Andrew - acidity
Damien - surface area

Molecules

It was great to have the Grade 9 students back in science class after the many hours of MacBeth rehearsals the last few weeks. We picked up where we left off- chemistry. Students learned about molecular elements, molecular compounds, and ionic compounds. They are asked to complete the questions on p. 261 for homework. We will take up this work on Thursday as we are skiing tomorrow.
